Something fishy about employee's activity

So one of the IT's in my department was placed on administrative leave today because they had found that 30 of the computers on our network had software to do Quark Mining. He told management he was using this mining software to "burn in" the hardware. We are not sure if he was referring to the cpu or the ssd's on the machines.

I have never heard the term "burn in" used before but he made it sound like it is breaking in the new hardware. We did not catch him in the act of mining but this whole story sounds a little odd, or is he being legit.

We also found two external cpu's connected to his work computer that he claims he is using the processing power over the connection for his home computer.

Does any of this make sense to you all?

Using mining to burn in the pc doesn't sound right. But yes, when you burn in a PC you allow it to run. Should any hardware be defective it will fail then instead of x years or months down the road when it will be a disaster. There are better ways to burn in a PC.

As for the extra processors, idk

Yeah but we are a company with maybe 120 machines and expected to grow to 180 by the beginning of next year. I could imagine so many of the machines failing that it would ruin us. The Intel NUC we have been implementing have been proving to be pretty robust so far.

We know the guy to be a hobbyist miner and from what I could tell on that one we found on the machines it looks like it is CPU based which might explain the CPU's running on his desk.

I think the guy is just trying to cover his butt.

There was a popular ranked CS:GO server that required third party software to run (to manage ranks, stats etc). People then complained about 99% GPU usage and general high temps + crashes when playing. It was discovered they were all mining BitCoins for some IT admins of the server :D
While the term "burn in" is legit (some thermal paste solutions only sets in correctly after some time of heat fx), this does seem very fishy. Prime95, OCCT, Furmark, ATTO etc are all much more efficient ways - and he knows about them if he's an IT admin.

Sounds like he wanted to use the mass number of computers to do mining to make money on the side. This is a huge conflict of interest.

Thanks everyone for the input, today I found machine in the act under his account.

We let the guy go as we seen the computer mining with a machine in Amsterdam.

The things some people think they can get away with.
