My desk top running win xp pro is connected directly (not wireless) to my linksys wrt54g wireless router ( which is hooked to the dsl modem) My hp laser jet printer is connected directly to this desktop via usb cable. Windows firewall is off

Internet works and printer works.

I have a laptop running XP Pro with a matching linksys wireless card which is only a few feet away (this is not a distance issue). Windows firewall is off.

Internet works on the laptop also.

Problem....
I want to share files from one computer to another. I also want to share printer that is connected to desktop.

I verified that both computers are on the same work group. Spelled exactly the same. I verified that both computers have file and print sharing enabled. I verified that both computers have TCPIP with auto assign ip on.

Neither computer can see each other. Please advise.
I am a newbe so kinda be detailed on what issue might be.
Where did I go wrong?

I did not and I do not want to use the network wizard. I want to learn to do this manually please.

Hurry...I am loading the gun!

One reason I like xp is that it did a lot of the networking setup automatically. I would suggest using the wizard.

I have not done what you wanted on an xp system but did it on windows 2000. So I will give you my experience (but it was on win 2000).

In general, you need to go to the printer property or install a new printer and allow it to be shared. You also have to enable sharing for your two computers or maybe share the Sharing folders. This mean that files you want to share must be in this folder. Once this is done you can log in and share files.

I know this is very general and good luck. Put the gun away.

It seems as though you have done everything right. If you go to My Network Places and drill down (entire network-MSW network) through your network, do you see both computers there? Normally, once you manually set all this up, you need to restart both computers. Try that before you drill down, if you haven't already done so.
Also, you mentioned file sharing being on, but did you select a specific folders on both PC's and share them?
For the printer, on the laptop, you'll have to use the add new printer wizard to navigate to the shared network printer to add it. I assume you have shared the printer as well.

Printers were already shared correctly. Also added to laptop correctly.
Also rebooted.

well if you navigated to the networked printer, the laptop must see the other PC?

Did you navigate thru network places to drill down to your network , then select "view workgroup computers"?

Do you have an Antivirus/3rd party Firewall? (Norton, McAfee, etc.) These types of programs have settings that would enable (or in your case, disable) file and printer sharing accross local networks.

hey BKSinAZ i'm also having the same problem...i'll be checking back in the thread to see if you fixed it...but you have to make sure...the folders you want to share have a hand beneath them so that its shared...to do that you need to right click on the mouse and go to properties...and then click on the tab that says file sharing and enable that there

do the pro versions of xp have service packs installed on them, if so which?

ok youre connecting via a router so this means ip assignment is probably dhcp. type ipconfig to get the ip addresses of the individual pcs.

what happens when you ping the other computer? type, cmd, ping 192.168.0.xx.

are the network cards and connections installations in my computer clean ie. no funny stuff like network bridges etc..

hey dave...how do u kno which service pack is installed? and yes i can ping each computer...and no funny stuff for the network cards
