Iron clad tips work best.
You didn't mention the wattage.
Do you have solder flux/rosin?
Edit: Most of the time people get too high of a wattage pencil for circuit board work.
The higher the wattage the harder it is on the tip.
One thing you can do to control the heat is to use a light dimmer to control the heat.
If you have a variable temp pencil you need to turn the heat down.

over and above what was mentioned.
A sandpaper super fine or steel wool.
Ive used 400 or 500 spec many times for cleaning.
Then wipe then heat then re tint with solder.
then re-solder. Always wiped the solder with above mentioning
and doing. Tips don't cost much. Depends on the specs of the iron
and where ya got it. Mine is super fine for maybe SMT.
Its temp controlled, super fine tips and grounded and expensive.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS clean your soldering tips when you're finished. It might be too late to salvage yours but clean from now on to protect what you've got.
At work I use some tip thinner before and after any work I do. Wire sponge and a damp regular sponge helps clean off the residue.
As others mentioned, you can try sanding down the tip, but it might be best to simply replace it.

Get a Iron Clad tip.
Don't use a file or sand paper unless you really have to.
Get a tin of solder paste/flux to dip the tip in then wipe on a moist sponge to clean.
When your through for the session melt a blob of solder on the tip and let cool.
There are all sorts of tips that can be utilized in the care and operation but I hate typing.
I have been soldering since 1970 and have made my living in servicing electronics since 1975 til I retired from it to be a farmer.
