"Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"
Only problem, it's on VHS.
So I was wondering what the legality would be if I torrented it and then burned it to DVD, since I already own it. I wanted to watch it and found out we don't have a VHS player any more, so I was just wondering. If it's illegal I'll go out and buy a secondhand VHS player.

Not sure if that document applies to the USA, I didn't read it all but it does say

The format shifting exception for films only allows films to be shifted from VHS to electronic format (s110AA of the Act). It is not permissible to shift films from DVD or from MP4. This means that films legally purchased online cannot be shifted to DVD and DVDs legally purchased cannot be loaded onto a portable player.

so owning an electronic copy of a VHS tape is legal but I don't know about gettign a different copy from torrenting, torrents use DVD rips which means that they are illegal by what that says.

If you want to do your won searches, the "legal lingo" for what this is called is "format shifting", also take a look at laws regarding personal archives of purchased movies.
