smart partitioning

anybody ever do this?

with a single hard drive make multiple partitions as the following:

drive c - xp
drive d - vista (or any OS)
drive e - programs
drive f - data storage

drive e would be used to share installed programs from either dual boots. i've been doing this with my test pc. however, since i'm not sure how to manually add registry information i have to overwrite the old install every time i install a new program in the other OS. anybody know of a quicker way of installing files (like modding the registry) or is this the only viable option.

thanks

what ? you've never done this ? I do this all the time but in terms of
drive e - programs
Some programs like photoshop or CorelDraw for that matter will have to be re-installed after a format.

damn i forgot the name of the program, Nlite Addons has a few you can check them out

Can I just ask why it's called smart partitioning? Do you mean it's called like S.M.A.R.T. or do you just mean it's a good idea to partition it like that?

good idea. it's just organization. especially if you don't like to deal with hdd fragmentation.

I just do a defrag overnight. So how big is the HDD and how big are the partitions going to be?

This seems like a good idea, when I get my 1TB I will probably do more than one partition after reading to see what results it has.

partitions sizes are up to you. for my next install i will go bare minimum to fit what's needed in the installation and use DATA for storage. again it's not required but in my mind would make organization much easier. especially if you have to reformat for some reason

XP uses a lot more than 2g to run.

Also, you will need drivers and all that. Plus some programs when you install go straight to program files without asking (or maybe I click next too often) and so that will be a problem. How big is the HDD altogether?

I have installed XP on a 2 gig hdd before but I'd recommend about 10-15 to be safe and I'd recommend 20-30 for vista.

I never partition a drive into smaller partitions. One drive = one partition. I use seperate drivers for my OS/programs and my data and back ups.
