slow wireless

i just got my netgear super g wireless router as i was having some connection problems.... now i can connect but it is really slow.. let me break it down

-3 computer, 2 desktops(1 is connected via ethernet to router) and one laptop

- i am having speed issues.. the laptop will only download stuff at aobut 250k a second.... the desktop that has the wireless will only do about 100k a second downloads(laptop has an atheros based wireless card, the desktop has a Texas instruments based card) then i go download the same thing off the internet from the desktop and am getting around 470k sec downloads

-downloads have been tested from the internet, and downloads from computer to computer(even from hard wired one) speed issue is still there.

-i can have one computer connected wirelessly, or both of them connected at the same time... the speed issue does not change.

- in router settings i have tried w/ "b and g mode" and with "g mode only"

-i have tried disabling wep and the speed issue is still there

-distance/signal does not appear to be the issue as i have tried this from my room(2 stories up and a lil bit over) and w/ laptop next to the router.

running latest version of firmware on router

tried turning off extended range feature and that didnt help either

changing the channel also did not help with speed issues

gotta love how i bought this router for its better speeds and its actually slower... the old 11b router allowed the full speed internet downloads.

speed booster or either download patches and also there will be speed issues if some of these computers are scheduled to download updates by themselves.

what do you mean by speedbooster? also, none of the computers have been scheduled to download updates by themselves. if it is a signal issue, is there something i can buy to put in between the router and my comptuer that will help the signal... is this what an extra access point would be used for? how would this be set up?

maby a firewall is slowing down transfer speeds?
no software firewalls of any kind.. not even sp2 firewall. i will do the netstumbler thing... i put the laptop close to the router and got the full internet download speed... but when i tried to share files from the computer that is wired into the router i would only get about 450kbps.. this would be about 4-5megabits maybe? anyways, in the taskbar it said it was connected @ 54mbps... im not expecting the full 54... but def. more than 4.. especially if its that close to the router. on the desktop w/ the pci wireless card the thing in the desktop will sometimes drop to about 11mpbs... and sometimes on the desktop i can only download stuff @ about 45kbps... i do alot of downloading and will use the file sharing feature alot, this is why im so mad about it.

i was actually able to do a download on the desktop and get around 250ish k/sec which is the fastest its gone... earlier i tried to do a download(from the other computer that is wired into the router and from the internet) and was getting about 15k/sec... also it struggles to connect sometimes which im thinking might be the card or low signal or something... as far as the laptop.. i was doing a d/l and was getting about 290ish k/sec and went downstairs pretty close to the router and was getting about 650ish k/sec... the taskbar said i was connected at 54mbps...... what kinds of speeds do you all get?

here is a zip file w/ logs from both.... on the laptop whenever the signal increases is when i walked down towards the basement... towards the end where the little gaps between the bars are.. that was me downloading something. i also did some downloads at the begginning of the log. the desktop on the other hand was not showing those gaps when it was downloading but it has before... they are also displayed in different units of measurement.. so i dont know what that is all about. i will be trying my friends belkin 11G router tommorow and see if i can get better performance out of it.

Analysis.

THE GENERICPCI_2FLOORSUP LOG :

The Linksys signal is insufficient for good transfer rates and therefore I would predict a poor signal. There are numerous signal fall-outs meaning that the signal simply is not getting there as it should.

The SUPER signal seems very good and therefore you should not see any problem there.

THE LAPTOP ATHEROS LOG:

The Linksys and Ronhome signals are strange as they basically fell out after 6:03. I would see a problem here.

The Super signal is also sufficient and should allow for decent speeds.

Can you tell me more about the position of the devices in terms of where they are in the house?

router in th ebasement hooked up to main PC.. laptop is on the firs floor across from the router... my desktop is on the second floor. the "super" is the one i was using.. not linksys or ronhome, those are one of my neighbors.

Try This Download for Speed Booster ive never really tired this before but its worth a try... http://www.soft32.com/download_19543.html

Hmmm

Ok it seems (strangely), that your desktop situated on the second floor is getting a better signal without interruptions. I would try and play around with the antenna position to see what would get you the best result. I would attribute most of your problems to a weaker than good signal because you said that in very close proximity of the router, you are getting 650ish.

i plugged the laptop into the router and was only getting aobut 880kb/sec transfers... wtf ? im about to plug in my friends belkin g router and see how that goes along.

well this is driving me nucking futs! anyways i tried my friends belkin router and it didnt help any. also i tried plugging in the laptop to the router, so that the desktop and laptop would be hooked by ethernet cable, i was still only able to get transfer speeds in the 800kb/sec range(shouldnt it be much faster since it is wired?)... so i figure about 8 or 9 megabits.... now my computer upstairs isnt transferring slow anymore. i can get from about 400-800kbps ranges..with the wireless connection w/ the netgear router (since it is a distance w/ some walls i could take that). the lweird thing is the laptop will get about the same speed even if it is right next to the router.

should i still get the super g netgear card and an external directional antenna(sometimes it has trouble establishing a connection, and the speeds arent usually that stable) and i figure if i can run it @ 108mpbs mode i might be able to get a lil extra speed out of it.... but the fact that actually wiring it up to the router didnt give me any extra speed puzzles me... surely this woulda made it 10x faster. i tried the belkin and netgear router and am getting about the same results when actually hooking it up to the router.

Well what is your internet connection speed? and when you tested the download speed on the computers, was anyone else using the other computers? And i also noticed that wireless slows down internet, my wireless card on the desktop has an average download speed of 150-225KB, and the desktop which is wired is between 250-300KB

my connection to the internet is like 4megabit i believe(... the 800k thing was transferring a file from a computer plugged into the router onto one that is connected to the wireless network. no one else was using the computers
