Slow Internet on Network

Hi,
I have a home network with just two computers, one is connected to the internet, the other shares that connection. I am using BitComet, and the download speed rarely gets above 3kbs. I have 1Meg ADSL, and before the network it was downloading at 120Kbs, why is this, is this the firewall or something?

Thanks, Rowan.

P.S. Im downloading legal things, like Fedora 4, but don't suggest downloading off the site as I would like to solve this problem.

P.S. 2. There are 35 seeds and 750 peers so that isn't a problem.

I am uploading at 10Kbs, and downloading around 3Kbs. And just now it skipped up to downloading at 11Kbs before going down. Are you saying the tracker might be limiting my speed because i'm not uploading much?

I don't use a router, the modem is connecting to the other ccomputer on network, and we share it.

How do i know what port its using?

Thanks, Rowan.

A router is so better than pc to pc conections, a router in every LAN would simplify networking so much. Check to see if you got a firewall runnig, if so disable it or check your bit torent client to see what ports it uses and open those ports on ur firewall. A bit torrent is just a huge web of computers downloading and uploading the file between themselfves. The download and upload will fluctuate but will smoothen out once you keep the download going.

I can't get a router, i have to stick with what i've got. I downloaded ubuntu off their website which is 600Meg and that was downloading at 120Kbs. And frostwire and bittorrent are slow. I'm sure i've opened the ports on my windows firewall on the main computer, i've turned the ubuntu firewall off but i can't get above 20 odd Kbs using frostwire/limewire or bittorrent. Is there anything i could do?

Thanks, Rowan
