slow external hard drive?

i have a western digital 1 terabyte usb hard drive for all my pictures, movies etc. i'd say around 2/3 of the times i click to open anything stored on that drive, it takes 10-15 seconds to load, due to the hard drive having to spin up and load i'm assuming. it's very annoying, and i have no clue if there's any way to fix it.

right now i'm using windows 7, but it's done it with vista and xp.

idk what model it is exactly, but when i look at the hardware properties it says "WD 10EACS"

any help would be much appreciated

How full is this external drive? The fuller it gets the more time it will take to load something.

If you've had the drive for a while, I'd unload the data, do a low-level-format/zero write then format and reload everything on it. This should help with fragmentation and any possible glitches in the FAT.

Now, if you can't do this, try defrag and chkdsk as mentioned.

it'd be a year old this month actually. it has 644 gigs free so it's only like, a third full. i'd say the last time i defragged it was a month ago probably and i haven't been putting that much data on it these days.

the drive has always done it though, not just starting lately. i'll try defragging it though tonight
