Simple Password?

I have a 120GB HDD that I keep financial info/rebates/etc pretty much paper work for the past 20+ years for most of the family. It makes it easier to do taxes and keep track of our business and stuff. I caught my nephew (6) playing inside of it yesterday and I am curious is there a way to do a simple login for a partition/storage hdd?

I don't need hacker security and I don't want one that permanently edits my files either (or has risk of corrupting files) I just want something that will require a password each time you access the drive. Is this possible without making user accounts or some PITA software?

I would create an account for him or just a general account for kids if you have them coming over alot and using your computer. Give it just user rights and then on all the folders you dont want him to have access to deny the account rights on the folder level.

Right click properties.. security is where you need to go. that should take care of it... deny read on his account only then test.

Im not sure either. query 'F1' key and search. 'Bitlocker'.
I think it might work with windows. think Vista and 7.
that might be what your looking for.

Bitlocker only comes with Windows 7 Ultimate if you bought ultimate you may aswell use its features.

I strongly recommend TrueCrypt.

Yeah was hoping to avoid it but I will try truecrypt. I preferred a simple access key to the drive instead of the PITA setup all these programs have you do. Thanks for the help.

Is there a way to have the disk visible each time you boot windows up without actually asking for the password till you access the drive? This program isn't as terrible (in terms of pita) as I originally thought after reading the FAQ. This would complete things though if I could get away with it.

NVM found out how to use favorites so all is good now. Thank you all for the assistance I appreciate it :)

I'm glad it works for you. I swear by it.

One thing though... the need to input a password whenever you want access to specific files is why you encrypt them in the first place. If you boot your computer and have the files visible immediately, then the files aren't secure at all.

The way I have my files secured is to input a password every time I need to use them. Yes, it's a PITA, but no one else has access to them at any time.

If that data is so important, why don't you simply hold it on the external HDD and put the password on that HDD through BIOS?On that way your HDD will be locked and there is no way that anyone can access it without knowing the password...

Or you can simply create a new account for other users with limitations and make your data private so they cant see it and access it and also change any options such as making them selfs administrator which enables them to do anything again...

Well I don't need security as while they are important they offer no damage if they got out. This was just to keep a child out of them and accidentally deleting them, also I have it set that way except I have a 15 minute timer which then closes the folders/hdd when not in use.

I don't like to mess with user accounts as they mess with other software I use and are plain annoying to me. Also BIOS lock can be easily bypassed and none of the files require that kind of overkill. As I said it was just to keep my files safe from a 6 year old with the ability to hit the right buttons :)

I am curious though is there anyway to put the TC container file on the store drive but keep it hidden at the same time? I just wonder what would happen if someone deleted that 1 file that is not hidden and contains access to your drive. I just noticed that I have a 200GB file sitting on my storage drive and the other partition is hidden.
