Hi, I have to computers connected via ehternet via a HUB and want to be able to share files and possible be able to map the other computers drive, by mapping a network drive if possible.

Instructions on doing this would be a great help.

Thanks.

first,whats ure operating system
Assuming its XP, first
1) make sure your network card is installed.
2) If your network is already set up (but with nothing shared)then u need 2 no how 2 share.
3) Open My Computer---then goto the drive where the folders u want 2 share are
4) right click on the folder you want to share and click on Properties--then goto Computer Name
5) click on Sharing--then under Network Sharing and Security
6) Select Share this folder on the Network
7) If you want to be able to change the folders and the files in them from the other comp then enable the second option.---Then Click OK
8)Another thing you want to make sure is that both comps are on the same workgroup. To do this:
a)right click on My Computer and click properties.
b)Down the page there should be something that says something like
Workgroup: MSHOME (or whatever it has been set to)
c)check on both comps that the workgroups are the same if they are, your all set, if not read on
9) Right click on my comp again---computer name---then under Member of goto workgroup and make the 2 computers' workgroup match
Step10)Grab a beer and (hopefully)enjoy a nice(well earned) cold beer

Hope it goes well

Hey guys, thanks but wont seem to allow me to share my folder on this pc. When i go onto shareddocuments properties and go share, then seletc to share once i have ticked both boxes i click ok and it comes with an error saying:

An error occurred while trying to share ShareDocs. The server service is not started.
The shared resource was not created at this time.

:$ thanks guys

Right, in order to start the process called "server" complete the following steps.

Click START, RUN, type CMD

In the command prompt type in "net start server" (without the quotes obviously).

See what happens then.

When i type in run CMD, it loads the black screen but doesnt allow me to type anything in their - just shows a flashing cursor.

But if i go to run and type net start server it loads the similar screen but says starting server then the black dialog closes down.

So not sure whats happened and when i go to try and share the folder the same error still appears.

Well, im not quite sure wots happened to your command prompt but i'll talk ya through the long way of doing it.

Go to START, CONTROL PANEL, click on ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, click on SERVICES. wait for the new window to load and then scroll down the list until you find an entry named "server". Double click on it and click START. Also, make sure that in the drop down menu on that same screen you have selected "AUTOMATIC" as the startup type.

thanks, but saying another error, cant start something or other....argh this is crazy. thanks for helping me dude.

Thats ok, what cant it start now, if its another service then i think you may need to do a repair installation from your windows disc because this isnt normal.

Erm...... yeh, i have never heard of so many troubles whilst trying to share a directory, i would suggest that you do a reapair installation or a system restore to a while back or something like that, but if sharing is not vital then dont bother.
