I have myself an account with dyn.com. The service I need from them is very specific. Here's my situation:
I used to be able to run a server with a few websites on it out of my home. Then I switch ISPs. I recently learned that with the basic package I'm on, they block port 80, which means I cannot run websites out of my own home. I could bump my account up to the business package, but that will cost me $55 more a month. So in an attempt to find alternate ways of solving my problem, I set port forwarding on my router to port 50000 instead of 80. Then, in order to save my visitors the hassle of typing my domain with port 50000 on it (like this: mm-theory.com:50000), I did some research and found dyn.com. Dyn.com told me they could provide a redirecting service (or what they call webhopping) whereby when a visitor types www.mm-theory.com it redirects them to www.mm-theory.com:50000.
I've been back and forth between their customer support for two weeks now and they have not been able to help me, so I'm posting this to see if others who are more knowledgeable in this area can tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if dyn.com actually CANNOT provide the service they said they could provide.
Please see the attachment. It is a screen capture showing what my zone settings look like over at dyn.com. They are setup as follows:
A record: *.mm-theory.com points to 161.184.240.190 <-- my router's WAN address.
cname: www.mm-theory.com is set to mm-theory.com
WebHop: mm-theory.com redirects to http://mm-theory.com:50000
These settings also have a TTL setting set to 600 for each of the above. I have no idea what TTL is but they tell my at dyn.com that I can leave it as 600 and it shouldn't make a difference.
One of the biggest problems I've been having with dyn.com is that I cannot have an A record and a webhop with both the exact same host. For example, if I set the A record to www.mm-theory.com, and then I create a webhop also with www.mm-theory.com, it will create the webhop but it will also convert the A record to a webhop. Likewise, if I create the webhop first and then create the A record, it will convert the webhop to an A record. In short, I can have either an A record OR a webhop but noth both. The only way around this is to create a different host for each, which is why you see the * for the A record host but nothing for the webhop.
One more thing to note: my domain mm-theory.com is registered with register.com (who admitted up front that they could not provide the redirecting service I wanted, hence my search for alternate services), but in order for dyn.com's webhop service to work properly, they said I had to change the DNS servers over at register.com to the ones at dyn.com, so my account at register.com now shows these as the DNS servers:
ns1166.dns.dyn.com
ns2156.dns.dyn.com
ns3164.dns.dyn.com
ns4141.dns.dyn.com
Please, can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or can dyn.com NOT provide the service they said they could?
