Setting up a small network...

Greetings.

Well, I have a Dell desktop computer (Win98) which is connected trough a crossover cable to my computer (ATX) to my internal network card (I have a separate PCI one from which I get Internet from). Now, I'm trying to set up a local LAN between the two, so I disconnect my network cable (so the ISP doesn't blocks me) and connect the crossover cable. Ok, good.

ATX's settings:
Windows XP Pro SP2
Network card: SiS 900 onboard (Automatic mode)
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Domain: none
Workgroup: Test
Name: Darky

Dell's settings:
Windows 98
Network card: Realtek 8139 (Automatic mode too)
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Domain: none
Workgroup: Test
Name: Jhonny

Any more info? the problem I'm having is that both have issues seeing each other's shared folders, sometimes the Dell can't access the domain, or my computer, or my computer can't access the Dell, even though they see each other...

crossover cables are for peer to peer only. all you need is cat5 patch cables, there is a diff. i'm no network expert but that should do it. i found that out when i set up mine. hope to be of some help! paul

Gotta find where to get those cat5 patch cables... one thing though is that I only need to set up file sharing between the two.. I can work with the rest working as it is, I guess...

just run down to your local wallyworld-they have them but only have certain sizes (length) Radio shack also has these in longer lengths. Cat 5 E is plenty good...e is for enhanced. i haven't bought any in a while but i think cat 6 is the lastest. you can right click the hard drive icon (in my computer) and you will see sharing under properties. good luck!!

Well I was able to do it without spending a penny. Looks like it was my network card's problem and not the settings, or so I think, guess I'll try the same setup with the internal network card again.

Anyways, I solved it this way... Dell got 192.168.0.1 and my PC 192.168.0.2, both in the same workgroup, first XP starts, then the Dell one starts, and for accessing, Win98 can't access the workgroup to see the computers, but it can see themselves in Network Neighborhood, from XP, all fine. I just have to access the comps in '98 using \\ComputerName and it'll work. Along with shared folders and stuff :). Yay!
