HI all I am new to Computer Forum. I need some help with setting up my network. I had it set up before and all 3 computers were wokring fine. I went home for the summer and when i got back I reformatted all the computers and now I cannot get the network to work again. All system are running on Xp home edition. The systems are all connected to a hub (D-Link DE-805TP) which is connected to the ISP's modem. The internet service is cable if that helps. I used windows network wizrad to set up the network the last time and it worked great. Now I a not too sure what the problem is. I configured the IP Address and I saw the computers but was knocked off the internet. Can someone please help me. Thanks

If you're going to be doing an internet connection and 3 computers, you'd be best off using a router. I'm not too sure how well it'd work with a hub...or if at all. Otherwise Check to make sure that all computers are in the same Workgroup. But I'm gonna go with the needing a router, not a Hub.

If your purchase a hub, you connect all the computers to it (just like a hub) with either ethernet cables or wireless. There is very little configuration needed, you just simply plug them in, and it should work. (wireless may need a bit more configuration), and with a router you dont need to use windows network wizard, just enable DHCP on your router and the computers will automatically recieve an IP address.

First piece of advice, invest in a router, as stated above. A hub will not be sufficient by any means for 3 networked computers. As Geoff said above as well, a router will assign IP's to each computer and little to no setup is required. The easy way out, a not very costly is just picking up a router.

Hey you guys thanks for all the reply. I thought no one was going to. I am going to pick up my router today. I am getting a Linksys WRT54GS with speedboost or something of that sort. I just want to know what is the speedboost is all about. Anyway thanks for the help again.

The speedboost im assuming is for wireless networking. If you are networking via wired cable, shouldnt have any effect. I think you will definately be happy with the ease of a router, not to mention the added security it brings.

the SpeedBoost is just a stronger signal on a wireless router. makes for faster transfer rates and such...but the NIC has to have speedbooster for you to notice.

Wait, wait wait! there's noting wrong with a hub, I'm currently using an Ethernet hub to network tree comps, I am accessing the internet from the hub(I have my DSL modem connected directly to the hub and I can surf the web from any one of the three comps independent from any other comp on the network) I also use file and printer sharing.

well try to disable then enable then repair the network connection...try resetting the hub...if all that doesnt work...idk..sry
