I am using a trial version of win server 2003. My mom does not want her computer to have anything to do with the server, but I want to use mine to join the domain. If I don't tell my moms computer to join the domain, will the server have any affect on my moms computer?
 
If I understand you question correctly, if your mothers computer isn't joined to the domain in the first place...then no, the server will not have an affect her machine. However, if you config the DNS settings on her machine to point to the W2K3 domain DNS server and if you remove the server in the future or when the trial runs out, you have to change her DNS settings back otherwise her computer will not be able resolve any FQDNs.
