Selling Requirements Discussion

In view of recent events, the idea was being discussed of members having to take a picture of the item they are selling, with a piece of paper which has their username and computerforum.com written on it.
I don't like to make knee jerk rules.
I think the 100 post rule has cut down on the number of fly by scammers.
Perhaps the photo rule could be only implemented for goods over $100?
At least it would give a higher degree of confidence to the buyer.
I am interested in everyone's opinions.

Eh, I personally don't think it should have to be a rule. I mean it's definitely a good idea, but I think it is something that should be left up to the buyer if they want to see the paper with the seller's username in the picture. Just my $.02.

Perhaps guidelines? Example, someone comes here and mass posts to 100, takes a pic with computerforum and their username, and drops the price well below retail/resell, I still wouldn't bite.

It's all about smart shopping. Look up their usernames on other forums, see if they have a history if they're stupid enough to use the same username to scam people...

I do think we need some definate rules though, but i'm not certain on what they should be... any ideas?

It does sound like a good idea. I haven't bought anything on here, but I do sometimes browse through see what people are selling and such. Since you should take a picture anyway, it doesn't take too much effort to right on a piece of paper right?
Good idea, may take a while to implement though.

Well really common sense needs to be used here more then rules. If someone is offering a GTX 470 for $200 there is a clue there. If its to good to be true and its being sold by a 1000 post or less member then 90% of the time it is.

I would support such things, and also requirement of heatware feedback link even if it is empty. Almost every other forum out there requires such things, and the larger we become, the more people are going to be selling things here. Its not much effort to require an extra 30 seconds, especially if you want to sell your product.

i agree with that....+ just because someone posts a pic with their username and date doesnt mean it wont turn into another scam.

If anything i think the 100+ post requirements needs to be higher....say 300 Posts.....people are joining this forum these days and getting to 100 posts within a day or two.

I also think that all transactions must be done through Paypal and the seller must create or provide a Heatware like Bomber suggested.

Making Heatware mandatory would help. I usually show proof in my 10 year valid paypal account scammers don't make it past 1 year :P

Lol, showing people ebay/paypal doesn't always work, when i was trying to sell my board, someone told me I would have to ship first, because I could have claimed the paypal account as mine(It's 11 years old, and the email addresses matched up :P)

I'd support the picture rule as a guideline and not really a rule as I'm sure that there are members here that do not have access to a camera or if they do it's not easy/simple/fast access to one.

I would however like to see a heatware rule implemented as well as the post count requirement be raised to 500, if not more.

If you are active member on the forum, you'll know when someone is posting flagrantly to get to 100 posts. Take NCSpecV81 for example, it was quite obviously a little while back when the 100 post rule was started for being able to post on the 3dmark06 thread that he was making list 40-50 posts per day and then all of a sudden nothing...then banned but thats another story.

I think, that the 100 post rule is fine, but also perhaps add a 3 month rule with it. 3 months is enough to get to know someone, and long enough to ward off 99% of scammers. And it's the combo of both that makes it really good, because nobody can just create a username and then leave and come back 3 months later. Now some people will probably say make it a year, but if you were an honest individual that hasn't been here that long you may get pissed about that. Like me, I've only been here for 7 months, and have well proved to be an upstanding member :D
Heatware is also a very good idea.

I think increasing the thread count a bit would help, but nothing extreme, maybe 200? As far as the picture w/ a piece of paper, I think it should be highly recommended but not required. It is up to the seller to request the information that they want. I also like the idea of having some sort of heatware or ebay account rating required.

I like the idea of the picture with the item, as it only takes 20 seconds to get a picture and put it on something like Imageshack.

How about

100 posts to buy
300 posts to sell

Would something like that be implementable?

Increased post counts arent going to help much, if at all. The user in question with the latest incident had over 300 posts. If you cannot prove you have the item, you should not be selling it in the first place.

yeah to sell stuff they should put the product with a paper with their name on it and snap a photo instead of grabbing a pic of it off the internet

I agree it should be guideline rule, not set in stone forum rule, it is up to the buyer what proof they want.

for instance, a user that has been here only 4 months and has 800 posts, I wouldn't buy without having a picture, if a regular was selling though I would have no problems believeing them to be legit with or without a picture. I know I can still get my hands burnt, but before my post for example, bbsk posted, even if I hadn't bought off him before, I would trust him without a picture
