See if you can figure this one out...

I am trying to determine what is causing our intermittant Network Lag in our office... I have downloaded NetWatch so I can ping all of our workstations and watch for strange ping patterns between all of the workstations. I have one computer that seems to be different from the rest.

When this one computer is having ping times of 15ms or so, all the other computers on the network ping out at about the same. But this one computer will occasionaly give me about 30 seconds to a minute's worth of 1-2 ms pings, but while I get 1-2 ms pings from this one computer, all the rest on the network at the same time start pinging out at 100-200ms!

Also, this one computer will occasionally start timing out, and I'll get timeout's for sometimes a minute or two and during this minute or two of timeouts for this one system, our network will Lag REAL BAD.

What could be the cause of this? Does this sound like a Adware/spyware problem, maybe a virus problem? Any suggestions??

I would check with the adaware spyware in the first case... I dont know what kind of network you have setup.. or how many computers... Do you have more than 20? And if so are you usein the router//switch method or the router//hub method? Do these computers enable employees to install and run programs?

In the back room, we have our main server that holds all our data and programs. We have our high speed internet connected into a router, and then to a switch (i think it's a switch, not a hub) This is a rather large switch with many ports.

In our office we have 7 computers wired up to this large switch. we also have one cable running to our customer service room where a smaller switch is located that adds four computers to the network. Then we have another cable running to the customer service room to another smaller switch that connects 5 more computers to the network, however, only two of the 5 are in use on that one. Total: 18 computers

I don't really agree how the network is set up. In my opinion, each computer in the Customer SErvice room should have it's own Cat5 running to the main switch in the back, but our company doesn't want to spend all that money on all that cable.

The system I mentioned above that is getting all the timeouts is one that's hooked up directly to the main switch in the back.

I have checked the computer for adware spyware and viruses, nothing. I have checked for any programs that might have been installed by that user, nothing other than what's supposed to be there.

I ran my netwatch overnight. This is also very puzzling...this one computer started timing out non-stop right at 8pm and didn't stop timing out unitl about 8:30 am this morning. This is EXACTLY the time when this computer is not in use! Any ideas on that one??

Any input is greatly appreciated as our employees are really getting sick of the major lag on our network....

Thanks again for your repsponses

I really doubt it's the cable, simply because of the results I got this morning when I came in. This one computer timed out non-stop as soon as it wasn't in use at 8pm when the office closed, it started pinging normally again at 9am this morning when we opened and that workstation was getting used again.

get a firewall that will show whats using the connection. (sygate) and see whats using the network during that time.
