SD vs. MMC - Price Difference

I need to get some flash memory for a digital camera that's rated for both SD and MMC media formats.

I've had a look on Amazon for both SD and MMC, and there's a big price difference. The question is, why? Is there a notable difference between the two formats that would make the extra cost worthwhile?

That's really weird... Typically, MMC cards are slower that SD, as they are slightly older technology. Physically, SD cards are slightly thicker(MMC cards basically just have a sticker over the bottom of the curcuit where SDs are totally enclosed in plastic) I have heard some MMC cards have caught up and might be faster than SD cards, but this was a while back. By now, they might be slower again :P

Hmm... I'd say go with the SD. The MMC might just be more expensive because you don't see them anymore...

MMC is old news. SD is sorta like the upgrade.
The only difference is that SD cards can be as much as 4 times faster than an MMC. SD cards have that little lock feauture on the card whereas MMC's dont. There just a little thicker, and are more durable than MMC.

The reason they might still have it and it may cost more is that the device that uses them can only use MMC. Not SD, so that may be one problem.

OK, it seems what I thought to be just a marketing gimmick was actually a format upgrade.

I stumbled across this table, which gave all the different speeds, and it seems MMCPlus is seperate to MMC, and has a transfer rate higher than SD. I thought MMC was MMC, regardless of what marketing words were attached lol. Perhaps that counts for the price difference.

Wow...those MMC plus cards are quite fast :D Thanks for the info... But either way, there shouldn't be that much of a difference in them. I know most SD cards are very slow to begin with :P
