School Network

Hey everyone I put one of these in the internet thread but I think it belongs here now,

My school network is really good and in CS:S I get pings down into the single digits easily enough.

However, once say every 10-20 minutes it randomly takes a jump to the ol 999 ping deal then goes back down. Unfortunately most CS servers kick you for breaking the 250ping limit. Is there anything that I can do to smooth out these little "hiccups" that seem to randomly occurr. Some upperclassmen were telling me about using some kind of HTTP program or something wherein you went through port 80 or something like that.?

rewire your schools network.
haha it could be due to the use of a hub instead of a switch...
i know my school uses hubs.
(btw my schools network is very inconsistent as well)

do you know anything about this program that they were talking about that let's you bypass it?

shouldnt you be working in school

sounds proxy like, also sounds like they dont know what they are talking about

well it's college so there's a lot of time for play and they probably don't know how to explain it but they do use it to play games so I know it works

it does sound a lot like proxy, but i dont see how that would help, the data still has to travel through the schools network system before it gets to the proxy, so no, i dont think what these "uperclassmen" were talking about will help you at all.

As others have said, it sounds like a problem in their network, and their really isnt much you can do about it.

Dont most servers kick you if you above it for several seconds? How long does it take for it to go back down?

I can't really say because usually it just loses connection and won't reconnect, but if right when it starts going up I Just type retry which reconnects to the server I'm fine.

It's just weird that it works so well for like 10 minutes then skyrockets and goes right back down again. Seems like that's fixable but I guess not.

When you get this "lag", switch programs and ping the server, see if you get a slow ping.
Then run a tracert, and find out where it is missing the connection.
Understand?

it seems like that would only work if his lag lasted a while, from what i can understand it just lasts for a second or two.

make a batch file... Does it always happen at the same time? Or more random...?

Im trying to help him find why it is screwing up, not give him dumb answers saying he has no control over it. Truthfully, if you went and talked with the network guys, they may help you out. Never hurts to ask...

I can't really say exactly but it seems that some servers it won't happen maybe but say once every 40 minutes but I could join another one and it would do it every like 7 minutes. So I don't know what causes it.

I might try to talk to the network guys but I doubt they will have much sympathy
