School Computer?

What do online schools do with computers they give to students? I would guess re-imagery, because I don't know what to expect, having my computer for three years. I secure emptied some stuff and 7 passed it, that should be enough, right? (This is an iMac)

Are you asking if the school is going to be able to see what you did with the computer?

In a sense, yes, though I don't much care. I'm just curious, because they wouldn't let me keep it.
Wanted to kill two birds with one stone.

If you already wiped it I wouldn't be too worried. I don't see why they'd purposefully go snooping, and they probably won't do anything unless you were cheating or doing something illegal. If it belongs to a school they'll probably just reinstall themselves and pass it of to the next student.

As I assumed, clean from both ends! I have an iMac 10.4.11, is that considered fair to give to another student? I've rolled with this thing 3 years steady now, no problems, no complaints.

Yeah that should be fine. That would take some digging to find whatever you removed and I doubt they're too suspicious of whatever it is you're doing that you want to hide. Hopefully not illegal. :P

Any torrents or music have been put to sleep with the force of the disk utility. :D

This desktop would give you freedom use but it might violate contract term for gaming, illegally download, etc. Better not use it for gaming.

7 passes is a bit much..
I know that where I work we just wipe them and that's it. We don't even bother to look to see what's on them. The only time I ever have to investigate someones drive is when there is a reason for it, ie we detect virus's, torrenting traffic, etc.

Yeah I figured that as much. I have a Mac, so I'm not worried about viruses. Oh, real quick, the stuff I'm deleting now...secure empty trash is enough, right? Everyone keeps telling me that's fine. And how long does re-imagery take?

Just formatting your drive would be good enough. Like I said, we don't take a look at the drive, we just format it and then either throw it in a box of sensitized drives or re-image it. As far as how long that takes, it depends. We (where I work) have multiple images of Windows and Linux for various purposes and each vastly differ in size.

Obviously different places have different protocols for this, but we don't ever deal with sensitive data, so ours is pretty lax.
