Same logon name on xp network

I have 2 xp's at home. John/Notebook/Workgroup and John/Library/Workgroup.

I can ping both from both but can not access any files. Do I have to log on with a different name for each?

BTW how can I keep a new user set up from appearing on the Welcome screen. I do not want every user I set up as part of my welcome screen.

Xp has completly screwed up the networking abilities so it is tempremental.
