same cable for USB2 as USB3?

I added a USB3 card to my desktop. I also purchased a USB 3 hub that I have plugged into the USB3 card. My question is-- can I use the same cable between the hub and say a portable hard drive that is USB3 capable as I would for a USB2 portable drive? The hub is obviously cabled to the new usb3 card with the correct cable, but I just wonder if the same old cable (that does not have blue insert in the cable ends) works between the hub and any usb2 or usb3 device? It seems to me that it would, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help!

You can use the same cable for all USB devices, but unless you use a USB3 cable on a USB3 device, you will only get USB2 transfer speeds.

If you use a USB3 cable on a USB2 device you will only get USB2 speeds.
