Routing internet through my computer

Hi,
My Router (BT Voyager 205) has a USB port, and an ethernet port. Problem is, the USB is really crap, and always disconects etc. Also, my parents laptop is using the ethernet port.

However, on my Mobo there are two Gigabit LAN ports. Can i run a network cable to the computer from the router, then from the computer to my parents laptop?

Thanks

Yup...Buy a crossover cable, which is an ethernet cable, just not a regular one. You will need a regular ethernet cable from the router to your computer, and a crossover cable from your computers second port to the laptop.

Use this setup and read this page..http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_xp
It shows you how to set everythin up.

**EDIT: Oh and by the way, you should seriously think about getting a new router. A wireless one with 4 wired ports too. Then the laptop can use wireless and your computer, and any others can use either wired or wireless connections.

Yeah, I am going to get a router with a PCI card & PCMCIA card for around £100, but i have to save up first.

Also, whats the differnce between a normal ethernet cable and a crossover cable?

the diffrece is the way they are made. crossover cable is wired diffrently than a standerd ethernet cable.

At last! I ried that today, and it works OK.

However, my connection speed is 2MB, but when i ran a connection tester from

That was the conection from my computer

And for my parents laptop:

Does this connection speed differnce have anything to do with that the laptop is a really slow chunk of a thing, or because my computer is using the banwidth before it gets to the laptop?

My parents will only use it to surf the web, so they wont need the sort of bandwidth BF2 needs :P

Most probably the second one, if your computer was actually a corporate server, there may well be no "lag" as in this example. But as you say they are only surfing and they dont sound too computer literate so im sure they're not going to notice are they??

Trust me, they do not know a thing about computers! All they know is how to use the internet (and i taught them how to)

My dad will probably comlain about it, but ill tell him that its because his laptop is poop or somthing (Or hint to get wireless :D )

If you don't want to buy a router, you could just get a cheap switch and plug it into the router's ethernet port. Then plug the laptop & PC into the switch. It still doesn't give you wireless, but it's cheaper.
