routers

why do so many ppl use routers instead of switches? there has to be some sort of an advantage or something.. i dont get why you would use a router..

a switch is like a hub, it doesnt offer any protection, its just a basic wy of networking computers, and through a switch, allowing them to send packets driectly from one computer to another. A router uses a switch, but it also servers as a firewall, and has many more settings, like autamitcly dialing into a dsl connection, and specifying IP addresses, etc.

okay so its easier for broadband sharing i get it.. but a router is a dumb switch.. it sends all the packets to all of the computers and then each computer has to use some of its processor resources to see if the packet is for it, if not it discards it. while a switch decides which packets go where and only sends them to the correct computer.

actualy, a router uses a switch, not a hub, so it works as a switch, not a hub, which is what you described. If you send a packet to IP ending 0.3, the router (switch), will send it directly to that computer, but a hub will send it to all computers.
