i just brought a brand new router a few days ago for my two computers at home, i did all the network wizard and stuff and now i can share/access files to each computer.
the problem is i still cant get both computer on the net!!
the internet works on the old computer when the cable modem is plugged into the computer directly but when the modem is pluged into the router, it wont work on any of hte computers.

can someone help me out here

What kind of modem and router do you have? You may have to call your Internet Service Provider because they may have to change their settings to allow it to work.

Um no, you are wrong.

Your computer with the settings to connect to the internet need to be removed.

You will need to login to your router and set it up to connect to the ISP and then distribute the signal to each PC.

To login you will need to type this into your IE bar.

\\192.168.2.1

Or something like it (using your routers ip address)

^ yea i did dat, is it because of the cable connecting hte modem to router, i heard you have to use a cross-over cable

btw how you distribute the signal to each PC i thought routers do dat automatically

yes you need a cross over cable from modem to router. If you dont have one then you can only have one PC with internet.. until you get the cable.

The only time I use a cross over cable is to tie 2 comps together. Modem to router uses a normal cable. Router to comp uses a normal cable. Both comps use a normal cable to plug into the router. Your router has several ports plug one comp into one and the other comp into another one.

What you want to do is to take the settings for the internet off the computer(s) that you did use to connect to the internet, do this by Control Panel>Network Connections>The select the settings that you did use, and delete them.

Create a new connection>connect to the internet>Set up my connection manually>connect using broadband that is always on> Finish.

Unless you are trying to set up the internet on the router itself. If you are you need to phone your ISP and get the settings, the Virtual Circuit: VPI (Range 0~255) VCI (Range 1~65535), they will also help you to go through the settigs aswell.

Oh and a Cat 5 cable is a cross-over cable aswell. It consists of 8 cables bunched together into 4 larger cables, it's confusing.
