router to switch

I haven't mastered understanding exactly how this works; but, I have a router downstairs with 2 comps running internet off of it. I don't want masses of cables running through the house to my room, so can I just buy a switch, run one cat5 up to my room, and then plug whatever is necessary into the switch? like this:

edit: also, does 100 or 1000 mbs really matter?
another thing, do i have to worry about halfduplex and duplex with a switch like i would with a hub?

That should work fine. As for speed, I wouldn't bother with anything more than 100Mbps unless you actually have a few computers that can use that(which most people don't) Right now, my main tower's the only one in our house with 1000Mbps NIC's in it :P

That's exactly how it should be done. You'll get whatever speeds your network cards/router support. Probably 100mbps. The only time you run into performance issues if you run two swtiches inline and even then it's minimal.

Run it (nic card) at auto negotiate. If you don't want to use that, run it at full duplex. You want to support traffic in both directions. Most switches will automatically select network speeds. If you use a gigabit switch, only the devices connected to the switch that support gigabit will run faster. Any communication back to the router will be at 100mbps automatically. So, if the Xbox,PS2 and etc. (which I doubt they do..360 may?) support gigabit, then the gigabit switch is a better option. Personally, I would go with this if you think you will ever upgrade your PC's behind the router with gigabit nics. Ofcourse, with this setup, you'll need another gigabit switch where the router is. With all that said, given your set-up, 10/100 switches are probably a better option and pretty cheap compared to a gigabit switch.
