Router To Router Connection

Hi,

We currently have two PEER TO PEER networks, ALL USE WINDOWS XP.

LAN@Location1 is here and has internet access
LAN2@Location2 is 20 miles away and has internet access

Both locations have linksys routers

I want to connect LAN@Location1 and LAN2@Location2 across the internet so they become all one big LAN.

like this:

(Lan1)--router---/internet/---router2--(Lan2)

In other words I want to double click on "my network places" and see all the computers at both locations as ONE NETWORK

can it be done using two D-Link Routers (model (DI-804HV))

thanks

I don't know how this can be done right off without using say FTP servers or something(which I'm sure there's a better way...) But, I can say it won't matter what types or routers you use. DLink, Linksys, whatever... It's all the same once you get on the internet.

Now if it was local, say Internent > Router > Router, you'd start having compatability problems.

yeah. thats true.

what i'm trying to do exactly is a backup backbone connection over the internet from one site to the other. at the moment the two sites are connected trough a fiberoptic link. but just incase that falls for some reason or anther, i'm trying to setup this alternative.

the idea would be through VPN. one router configured the server and the other as the client, which keeps the connection active permanatly through stiatic IP's.

i hope this helps you get a better view of my prob.

thanks

to accomplish this you'll need to purchase a business class connection then location A and Location B could connect to each other. The problem is, that you might want to upgrade your routers to something that can handle a bit more traffic. You start putting multiple clients on both sides you will see your consumer level router start to puke.

There are several ways to accomplish this once your business has signed up for a business class connection. That business class connection would put both Network A and Network B on the same network. You could then create a bridge from A to B by configuring your routers to allow connections and such.

Really trying to do this with consumer level internet connections and consumer level routers is kind of just asking for trouble IMO.

thank...what you said makes a lot of sens. i have two dedicated ADSL modems with static ip's. at this stage, all i want to do is to mangage and estamblish a connection between the two routers and manage to ping a client pc from the remote network.

thanks.
