router slowing down internet

Hey everyone...we have a 108mbps Netgear router, and so far, we haven't had problems with it. However, we came back from vacation a few days ago, and the internet was very slow. We figured it was just cable being...cable...until the problem persisted. I called the cable company, and they told me to unplug the router and hardwire the modem direct to a computer. I did that, ran a speedtest (speakeasy.net/speedtest), and everything was fine...the d/l speed was almost 9 megabits per second. Next, I called Netgear tech support, and he told me he couldn't help me because the product was out of warranty.

So, I plugged the router back into the modem, and ran the speedtest again. The first result I got was 808 kilobits/sec (download). Then I got 670 kilobits/sec, and now I'm getting 487 kilobits/sec.

So, what gives? Why is the router slowing down the internet so much? We didn't have this problem before, which leads me to think that the router may be dying.....

Have your actual download speeds been effected because i've had the same problem with Speakeasy, but my download/upload speeds hadn't been effected and i've only had my router about 2 months!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking...there is a clear problem with the speed. I'm downloading a file (an upgrade for Opera, just so you don't think I'm pirating) that is 4.7mb. It is telling me it will take3 hours and 52 minutes to finish downloading (already downloaded 20%) and it's downloading at 0.2 KB/s.

Well, I tried upgrading the firmware, and now the problem is worse. I can't connect either wireless or wired to the router- the little wireless antenna doesn't go on or blink, and if I hardwire it, the computer will connect but the router will not administer an IP, so I can't do anything. Right now the computer is connected direct to the modem, but the other computers in the house (including mine) don't work on the internet. Netgear won't help me unless it's through email or the "premium" (paid) support, because it's out of warranty.

you do realise that with a 9mbps connection you will NEVER get to download at 9mbps/9000kbps... its just impossible.
the usual download rate is 1/10 of the overall bandwidth,
EG:
56k, downloads at 5.6kbps
512k downloads at around 51.2k
etc etc
you will be looking for download speeds of about 800-900kbps

also, the speed from downloads is dependent on THEIR connection, not YOUR connection.

btw, 500kbps is still very fast, so stop whining!

I'm not sure what you're saying...I know that it won't use all of the bandwith, but right now I can't connect at all.

And I'm pretty sure that Opera's servers can handle more than 0.2kbps, in fact, I KNOW they can, because I've downloaded from them before, and it's only taken a few seconds.

check for an IP conflict

I don't think you're paying attention to my posts...

There WAS a problem with speed. I tried upgrading the firmware. Now I can't connect to the router at all. The wireless device in the router doens't turn on. If I try to hardwire it, the router doesn't assaign an IP addy to the computer, so it can't use the internet. I also can't get into the router configuration page.

Did you install the correct firmware?,Restore factory settings first, then install firmware. Then turn off the router and modem, turn on the modem when for example the rdy light comes on turn on your router.?
