could you tell me the differences between these device ???
and one more question , one person that comes to your house for the job of connecting your computer to Internet , what his work includes ???
thanks

If you want more details, look it up on wikipedia, or ask me when I'm not laying on the floor with one of my old "tester" systems :P

A router is basically used to connect two networks together(in the normal case, a private network and the internet)

A hub(and switch) basically are just the way to connect computers together on a network. A router typcialyl has one of these built in. A switch is higher performace.

A gateway is what the computer goes though to connect to the internet. Basically, your router's IP address.

As for a bridge, you might need to look that up yourself... I know it's to connect network segments together, but I don't know the best way to explain it. It's not something you need to bother with in your typcial home network...

his job is installing software, installing any hardware (he will usually ask you where you want it put for convenience), checking for connectivity, cleaning up, then scamming you into buying something you dont need :P

well thanks !!! and ...
my friend uses router and his telephone to have a connection
but I dont have telephone , what is the connection for my computer ?
thanks !!!

Well, you get your internet through your house's lan line, which goes to your modem. You could also have cable internet, or satellite.

uh what? lan, or 'local area network'. most every place nowadays has one, all it means is all the computers are on a network, that isnt, say worldwide. its local.

well , I have just gone to an office that help me with connection
I have a question that I think last night , my friend as I said before :
telephone and router , how about modem ??? I usually hear about
telephone and modem before ???
thanks !

As far as I can 'translate' you're asking about dial-up internet

Dial-Up internet is when you plug your telephone line into your computer. You would need to plug the phone line into a dial-up modem, which then connects to your computer.

thanks , but I going to use ADSL and they say to me that they will assembly a quasi-telephone line for me ( My family dont use telephone ) and give me a router not modem
