Router Advice (SPEND MY MONEY)

Basically I want a new router - the one I’m using at the moment is a Mickey Mouse no-maker which has crappy software and is extremely hard configure e.g. forwarding ports etc.

SOOO - before I run off to ebuyer and order the first thing I see - is there anything specific I should know when buying one? Good makes or models? I’ve heard some routers are faster than others – is this true? If so, which ones are fastest?

One of the main reasons I want one is so that I can use bit torrent so a router that has good software and is easy to configure ports with would be nice

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY ADVICE!!!

P.S. It needs to be wireless

P.P.S. My budget is around £30-50

I don't think you could go wrong with a Linksys WRT54G. Up to version 4 (ver 7 is the most current one), you could flash it with 3rd party firmware, which gives you even better control over your router. Although I use Linksys' firmware on mine, it works perfectly (I'm a heavy BitTorrent/newsgroups user, and gamer).

It's pretty easy to figure out and configure. Good luck!

Oh, and it should be right there in your budget!

I would buy either buffalo or linksys. I have a WRT54GL at home running third party firmware and love it. I set up a larger scale network for a client of mine not too long ago and used three routers (one on each level of their location) of the same type and networked them all together. So they have secure wireless broadcasting throughout their whole location plus 4 port switches on each floor allowing them to patch in their few wired drops.
