Router 54MB/s, Internet 60MB/s max download question

I have a question about my internet speed and router speed.

This is my setup:

Internet ISP = 60MB/s
to
Router Linksys WRT54G max54MB/s
to
desktop gigabit card 1000MB/s

I went online to do a speed test and these are my results

so my question is:

why is my internet speed download 64.39MP/s

shouldn't it be maxed out at 54MB/s because my router is only a 54MB/s router?

i was thinking about buying a new router, so i can take advantage of my 60MB/s internet,

but now according to speed test my router is faster than 54MB/s for some reason , i don't really need to buy a new router,

any i missing something here?

help!

Any wireless device is limited to 54mb/s while any device hooked up via an ethernet cable can get up to 100mb/s.

oh i get it.. my desktop is wired so thats why i get my full 60mb/s

I put my desktop on wireless usb and this is what i got

wow! so little , what a big difference, i wonder why i got 20,

my usb wireless card must be limited?

i checked online and my usb key is D-Link DWA-125,

its supposed to be max 150MP/S

Only limited by any obstructions, distance from router or other wireless interference. How far away are you from the router?

the router and desktop are in the same room, no obstructions, about 10 feet away,

i tried a usb 3.0 in the usb and no improvement,

my wireless settings are :

security mode: WPA Personal,
Group Key Renewal: 3600 seconds
Mode: Mixed
Channel: 6 - 2.437GHz

im thinking my router is old and slow

It's probably either a wireless channel issue or wireless interference. Do you have the latest firmware for the router? You also have to remember something, that router is very old and may be dying on you.

ive tried almost all of the channels, the range i get is from 10mb/s to 22ms/s

i got the best reception using g-mode, i have the latest firmware, but it's about 5 years old, since it's a very old router,

it may be time to get a new one, now i have a better understanding of how it works. luckily, my desktop is wired,

there is lots of wireless interference, i live beside a big cellphone tower

thanks for the help

First, you are mixing bits and bytes. Second, the wrt54g is super ancient and doesn't have enough CPU to route that amount of wired traffic. Third, 802.11g is also super old and you are generally lucky to get much over 20 mbit via wifi in real world performance.
