rookie needs urgent help!!!

Hi all. Ive got a 4year old laptop (hp pavilion dv6907ea). The screen cracked last year so i bought a new laptop. Recently ive been wanting to get all my files such as pictures from it. I thought the best way would be hook it up to the tv. (HD LCD TV). I tried using a hdmi cable but no joy. I just cant seem to display on my tv.
Does anyone know why this us... Remembering that i cannot see a damn thing using the laptop...

Oh btw. It starts and runs fine if that helps...
 
Did you try using Fn key+the function key in which screen/laptop is shown?
