Restart vs. Shut down

Inquiring minds want to know... well, at least my inquiring mind wants to know. A lot of times a program will instruct you to restart the computer. I don't know exactly why this is, but that's another question. The question at present is, does shutting the computer down, and starting it back up (say the next day) have the same effect as rebooting - or is this two totally different things?

Thanks for your insights.

Same affect, just at a later time. Sometimes drivers won't fully install until you reboot the system as well.

Yes, they are the same.

The main reason you need to reboot is because files that are currently in use can't be replaced so a reboot is necessary to be able to replace those files.

They're not the same. Firstly a shutdown resets int0 on the memory by dumping the voltage. A restart, doesn't do that. This is why when you make changes to your BIOS, the handler will shut down (rather than a simply restart). Cold vs Warm Boot. Many differences.

OPERATING SYSTEM ---> It's the same since data just needs to be modified on the hard disk drive and no power off or/and power on makes any differences. All this is of course being done automatically.

BIOS ---> Not the same since some of the configurations in the BIOS requires the computer to shut down on few seconds and then turn back on in order to apply them correctly while other configurations do not require that and it simply restarts the computer in order to apply them correctly. All this of course is also being done automatically.

Shutdown also terminates all the electricity in the computer components completely and that also clears everything from the RAM memory.

CONCLUSION: Don't worry about it since all that is programmed by programmers to do everything automatically.

Cheers!

Not true completely. Some models still have power to the usb ports.

But again. As far as OP is concerned they are same when installing programs/drivers. The system needs a reboot, now or later, to fully install the software.

Thanks to all

Thank you, everyone! I appreciate your insights. This certainly helps me better understand what's going on under the hood of the computer - and gets me another step closer from leaving my novice status.

Say, what exactly is a "quad check". I'm sure that doesn't have anything to do with the Quad at the U of M. By the way, I'm in NC now, but I used to be a Missourian. My sister lives in Columbia. Been there many times.

Just to be clear. The UEFI firmware (different from a BIOS), can have interactions with Windows during run time. So for the second time (for a time, restarts didn't go through POST), there is a difference between Restart and Shutdown. Without parsing INT0, Windows can still interact with 'non-reset' parameters. Making a complete Shutdown the only way to confrim INT0. Reference.

Case in point is the fact that the NEW Windows and UEFI interactions also allow "...fast boot and resume from hibernation". Windows and the new form of a BIOS (UEFI) are no longer seperated making a Restart or Shutdown a potentially a very different prospect.
