Ok. i have a tool from Klein. Want to replace the plug on the cable and experimenting with smaller cable. Its a cat6. Im guessing i know but thats it.
Have a router with many computers and this is new to me. I think i just need this the 2nd picture i think then hook up.

Im looking at the first picture. then comparing two pictures for the RJ45 plugs and they are both different. which one.?

sorry, im confused and intend on doing this. Its the adventure.

thanks JohnB but why does it make a diff. Yes its cat6 (two lengths of 75 ft).
On the other hand the way i understand it its just a higher quality wire. Im asking
because i don't know. i thought they were hook up the same or am i wrong.
There both straight through, right? Whats different?

On the lighter side the link i posted and look at the RJ45 connectors the first two connectors are hooked up different. Why.

Again i ran 5 all through the house. 6 is in the basement which is almost done.
im confused because they are both straight through's.
thanks for the response.

Im reading it now your link. Clear it up in case i missed something.
thankyou

Hopefully I understand your questions right.

The older way of wiring the cat 5 is the t-568A, the new way is the t-568B. Either way is correct but all the new cables today are wired the 568B version. Again, just make sure you use cat 6 connectors on cat 6 wires and cat 5 connectors on cat 5 wire as they are different sizes.

When you asked the first 2 connectors are hooked up differently.. which connectors are you talking about? The only time a crossover cable is used is between pc's. Any other time a straight through cable is used.

Technically, you can wire the ends any way you want just as long as they are wired the same. But if you are gonna do it, you might as well get accustomed to doing it the correct way.

If I didn't answer all your questions, let me know and explain more on what you need help with.

Its making more sense now. So technically if i have a cat5 i could wire up as t-568B.
And your also saying the plugs are different? even though they look the same.

The reason i said that i was going to try it on a 5' cat5 cable and i cut the plug off. The new plugs i have is for cat6. Can i install the cat6 plug on the cat5 and wire as t-568A and make it usable?

Yes.

Both ends need to be wired the same in order for it to work. If you wire one end t-568a and one end t-568b then you will have a crossover cable and this is only required when you are networking between 2 pc's.

You also need to make sure you are using a cat 6 connector on cat 6 wire and cat 5 connector on cat 5 wire.

The plugs are not the same, the cat 6 is a little bigger as the cable is thicker than a cat 5.
