hi all,

i have windows xp pro installed on one of my computers here at home and im trying to figure out how to remote desktop it from a friends house or anywhere else i can. i have remotely connected to it from other computer on my network but have been unsuccessful from computers at other locations. i have a SMC7004AWBR wireless router (part 540.5435 i think). I know that the problem is just that i do not have the right IP address to connect to. so my main question is just about how to forward ip addresses? i think thats what its called. I just need to know how to configure my router to send me to my individual computer with remote access when i try to connect. i'm also not sure which is my real ip that i will connect to once i configure my router...is it the WAN IP, gateway ip, dns, or secondary dns?

thanks a lot,
-scott

Remember that you have 2 ips for every computer. You have a local and a public ip.. If i wanted to see/ping/connect to another computer in the same household.. i would need the local ip. But if I wanted to connect to your router, which then forwards your public ip to a specific ip (local) of a machine... Your local ip is probably starting qith a 192 or a 168 or a 127... Your public ip could be anything different. To find your public ip go here http://www.whatismyip.com/
Remember your public ip can change daily (if dsl) or rarely if cable.

Forwarding the ports is the easy part, you need to the know the port number to forward, and your local ip of your pc (which is assiged everytime you turn your pc on... meanig it can change)
