hi,
I do repairs on friends computers etc. Just wondering what would be the easiest way to setup so i can remote desktop into their pc and do minor fixes so i don't have to go to their place every time. Any programs i can view their pcs from and such that don't cost too much?

When it comes to remote assistance for friends and family, I use TeamViewer. It has a free, non-commercial version and I think it's a lot easier to use than logmein when it comes to repair jobs. You just send an email with the Quick Start file (or download URL) and have them run it, while you install the full client on your PC and connect to them using the session ID and password they give you.

It's worth checking out.

Does team viewer support encryption? Not many "free" remote desktop clients support encryption. Typically the paid ones do.

I'm pretty sure it encrypts the connection.

The connection isn't the only thing I would be worried about. Does it send usernames and passwords in clear text? Also, pretty sure is not yes or no.

I find a lot of free remote desktop client apps out there to lack any security features and their pay for versions are the ones that have them.

Is there anyway to do this without running a program on your access computer. As in, I'm at work and want to access files at home but installing/running a program from my work computer is not gonna happen. I used to have some sort of proxy set up on my home computer that would let me browse past the restrictions on my work computer, but now I find I mostly want to be able to work on stuff I have at home and am too lazy/cheap/etc to get a flash drive (which to me is also a security issue in the idea that I've bought like 8-10 over the time and constantly lose them). The data is still secure with U3, I understand, but losing some of my vital information would take awhile to rebuild and I write a lot so losing stuffs isn't good because I can't replace such writing.

You can go through the trouble of setting up a VPN and then use Windows Remote Desktop. But, TeamViewer doesn't require such mess, I connected today over the Internet to a computer 30 miles away and all I had to do is set up TeamViewer Host with a password. They have a server that handles the connections, so there's no router configuration, port forwarding, proxies, firewall config, or VPN setup. You can also log into your computer without it being logged in prior to connecting, like if you reboot that machine. Also, you can send an e-mail to someone with a link to the TV Quick Setup program, which gives immediate access to that computer and it's easy for that someone to set up. TeamViewer is the best remote access program I've used and I will be singing its praises for a while.

Well, teamviewer claims to use SSL and AES 256bit encryption....However, I would still want to test it out. Looks like it uses the same standards as logmein.com does. So it looks like they may be about the same product.

TeamViewer includes full encryption, based on RSA private-/public key exchange and AES (256 Bit) session encoding. This technology is based on the same standards as https/SSL and is considered completely safe by today's standards.

The key exchange also guarantees a full client-to-client data protection. This means that even our routing servers will not be able to read the data stream.

Im not set up now. But curious. Im concerned also about keyboard. Could someone try for now and post back.
Virtual keyboard and see if it works with this.
thanks........

Just about all windows should support this feature.
xp, 7 etc.

The virtual keyboard has to be good for something.
Still watching.

I said it before and will say again.
Get up check the email and news then visit here.
come back 20 min later and find my mouse moving.
Where........every directory that was authorized for ftp server.
Now i want to know.
One thing though. I panicked. shut er down and uninstalled.
If i was smart i could have looked at the last wan ip that was on. My fault and learning curve. i was using RealVNC Enterprise. Lets finish er up. Yes ....security is a big issue for remote and FTP. I do this at a hobby level only.
Would love to see more comments. thanks.
