Recording from sound card?

I need to record something I have playing on my computer, but I don't want to resort to holding a microphone up to the speakers, for obvious reasons. Is there a program I can download (preferably free) or a cable hook-up that I can make that will record directly from the sound card? I'm running Windows XP pro on a Dell Optiplex GX240. Thanks in advance!

Um, I know sound forge has that option, but it's not free... Some soundcards let you set the input to stereo out, what you hear, or something like that... I assume you've checked that you're soundcard doesn't have that option? I know my sound blaster live did...

How would I go about doing that? I have a Creative SB Live! Value (CT4780) Sound Card. I hunted around in the "Sound and Audio Device Properties" of my control panel, but I don't want to mess anything up by clicking random buttons.

No no...just your volume proporties. Just choose it as your recording option. Most all creative labs soundcards have this option. Or, you should have a program called Creative Recorder that would work...

i have a soundblaster live! sound card and all i had to do was go volume properties -> recoding -> and set the recording device to "what U hear"
