Recording audio through sound card

Hi, I am new here and not the most computer literate guy around. Hope I don't ask to many dumb questions.:) So here is my first situation/question:

I have a Gateway desktop that is about 7 years old (Windows XP) and is used as a secondary PC. I used to be able to record audio through the sound card, but that disappeared a while ago. The sound recording device is "Realtek HD Audio" as is the sound playback.

When trying to use Roxio, Nero, etc, I can record but no sound wave shows up on the recorded area. The only input options I have listed are: Mic Volume, Line Volume, CD Volume and Front Mic. I assume there must be some other setting that is now missing like Stereo Mix.

I have tried all I know to activate Stereo Mix or anything else to no avail.:( How can I get this option back? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Wayne, welcome to the forum.

First question, what are you feeding into your PC? ie; what are you recording?

Second question, where are you plugging it in? It needs to go into Line in or Mic port.

You can find audio drivers for your PC here: http://support.gateway.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=2818

Uninstall any Realtek items in add/remove programs, restart, and then install the new downloaded drivers. You might have to setup your volumes/microphone again, but hopefully the new drivers will fix your problem.

I am trying to record streaming radio like AOL radio, etc

"Second question, where are you plugging it in? It needs to go into Line in or Mic port."

I am not plugging in anything as AOL radio comes through the speakers via sound card.

"You can find audio drivers for your PC here: http://support.gateway.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=2818"

I tried that and have the latest drivers for Realtek.

Am a little concerned about uninstalling Realtek and trying to add back as I have no discs (preloaded I guess on motherboard). After researching and reading all the posts on this forum about this, I believe I have a Realtek "edition" that was issued without Stereo Mix. Probably easier to get a new sound card and be done with it. What do you think? How hard to change cards and what does it look like?

Very easy.

You take off the side panel, touch an unpainted metal surface (to discharge any static), put the card in the first free slot. Plug in power connector if need be, then replace the panel and turn it on. Enter the BIOS (commonly F2, DEL, F10, or F12, or a custom button on some screens) and disable the integrated audio if possible, save & exit (F10 key)

Then you install the drivers for the new card, make sure it's the default input/output device for sound and away you go.

Budget will dictate the quality of what cards you can get but a $20-$30 Asus Xonar DG is hard to beat. Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132020

You still haven't said what you're recording or using the input for, but if it worked on built in audio I can only assume it will work with a dedicated card.
