Heya all

I play bass guitar and i've managed to do some recording by using an 7.1 audio cord and 2 adapters in through my oh so crappy comp.

I was wondering if it would be wise to put a decent sound card in my future comp for recording reasons for the best quality of sound or is it fine to use the sound inputs on a recent motherboard which i am yet to choose?

Also, are there any sound cards that have a line in and out jacK?

I have had a quick look at this usb divice:

http://www.etcetera.co.uk/products/EMU022.shtml

Would this be a better option, or is there another bettercost effective way?

Sure your get better sound from an aftermarket card, more options for recording and output as well. However is it worth what you'll pay. It really comes down to what you need to do and how much your willing to spend.

Dont bother with an expensive sound card, just get an audio interface that will last you forever. It will record good and sound WAY better than recording into a sound card. Check out the Tascam US-144 and 122. Ive had both and they are awesome and include Cubase to record with. Its your best option.

If you have no room for a regular interface, you can get an PCI interface. But firewire or usb interfaces are also great. If its mainly a hobby type of thing, you most likely will not need an interface with many ins/outs.

The quality will be so much better than a regular soundcard, your latency will also be lower, as many interfaces have a dedicated ASIO or drivers like that. No more ASIO4ALL or creative drivers. lol

Most interfaces will come as a preamp as well so you can really get a great clean sound, but if you dont have that option, a simple tube preamp should be purchased sometime later.

You wont regret getting an interface. If you have a guitar center, go in with about $100, maybe a bit more, and tell them exactly what you want. One channel, two channels, x channels, what the connection type should be, and they will have a perfect one to show to you. Going for a warranty is also worth it, cause you dont want any shorts going on that kill one of your I/Os.
