Recommend an ISP for me!

Hey,

o2 have just stopped our account because of going over the fair usage policy download limit to many times.

I use the internet for application like Steam and iPlayer, and also download ALOT from file storage sites like Rapidshare. Every game I buy of Steam can be up to 7-8GB's and everything I download from Rapidshare can be 4-5GB's a time, so this just adds up to more than o2 were allowing.

Im not bothered about waiting to download at off peak hours like 12am - 8am. I can schedule the downloads for that time.

What I need is an ISP that will give me truly unlimited downloads, whether that be only at off peak times, Im not bothered.

Im aware that Sky are offering unlimited ADSL2+, but this will not be available to me for a LONG time. I can get ADSL 8MB/s max in my area.

Is there an ISP out there that wont tell me to get lost after 3 or 4 months?

sorry, i haven't followed your posts yet to see where you are located, but talking about o2 and sky, are you in the UK? or Ireland?

In ROI i use UPC which is 30mBps and unlimited download. I have had them over a year with no complaints from them. average 100GB a month down/up.
cheers.

If your in the UK id recommend Virgin Media....Fantastic speeds,Unlimited use so you can download as much as you want without a cap!

Don't go for Tiscaly or TalkTalk!

I don't have internet for 65% of the time!

Anyway im going with Plus.net as they have Static IP. But 80GB limit between 8AM and 00:00, But i DL all my files at night anyway.

I can get you 10% off your next orfder if you PM Me ;P

That's not quite correct... they have stupid download caps that you have to search their website for. But saying that, I would also recommend them, they are by far the best ISP I have come across, mainly cause they use Cable / Fibre optics and therefore can offer the best speeds etc...

I personally am on Sky and it's ok, but my line won't handle more than 6 1/2 mb which is a bit of a bum considering I currently pay for 10mb and they are going to be upgrading it to 20mb soon...

I'm on orange, pretty basic, not sure what the download cap is, The bundled livebox is very reliable. I live right next to a BT exchange so I would get fast speeds from them, but we're stuck on contract with orange. =/

+1 for virgin media :)

Virgin Media, if you are downloading a lot.

Don't expect good pings though.

I get very good pings, even in online games. :)...just their Upload is crap.

Dropkickmurphys, what are these limits you seen?...because one month i remember downloading something huge, something like over 7gb and it was fine all throughout that month no problems at all.

Im pretty sure there isnt any caps.

+1, stay away from tiscali/talktalk.

my nan is with them and absolute pile of crap doesn't cover it. The speeds are terrible, the support is crap, the hardware is rubbish, wouldn't ever use them

My girlfriend is on orange and they are alright, however, I don't know if you have the same problem, but she always loses net a couple times a week for a few hours at a time. They also had to come out and install it all twice because (I don't know the ins and outs, she told me this and she isn't too tech savvy) they put the wrong stuff in first time, so whenever the phone went, they lost internet.

-1 for sky too, but +as many as I can for virgin.

We used to be with sky and from 8pm - early morning we lost net compeltely every night. We were paying for 10mb and the highest we ever got was 4. The only good thing I can say is after hours on the phone, we finally got one non-indian bloke that wasn't talking off a piece of paper who refunded us credit with Sky, which we won't ever use, but atleast we got SOMEONE to do something about it, even if it was 6 months after the contract ended and was someone trying to reel us back in. That I should point out too, after 14 months, we only a month or two ago had them stop calling us trying to get us to rejoin, and that was only because we said if they don't stop calling us we are putting in an harrassment complaint. Nearly as bad as AOL for leaving them.

Virgin though, haven't had any problems (touch wood). We get the 20mb package and I have seen downloads of 35mb, not steady, but has been up there. The highest steady I have seen it is 24mb. We are in between 2 cities though and also right near the exchange, so we have fibre around here and don't have a large distance from the exchange. For good ping in games, It is always either myself or a dutch bloke who have lowest pings on my clans CoD4 server, and same goes for if we are in other peoples in clan matches. In BC2, always have the loewst, unless it is a server from a long distance away, in MW2 I start hosting after about 5 matches, so upload is good too, when I played WoW my latency was always 30 or less on private servers, and 80 or less on public, so pings in games I really can not moan at. Those are all with 3 other computers on the net wirelessly while I am hard wired, so not full bandwidth either

We have the same problem. However it's usually only for about 20 Minutes here :P orange said they were "updating" the Livebox software, but I don't see why they would have to do that every week? Here's my speedtest.net score :)

As you can see, I get fairly quick download speeds, but crap upload speeds. The ping time is pretty slow, too:D

There you go mate... they have different limits at different times... i remember at my last house at uni we had medium 2mb and if you downloaded 500mb between 9 and 5 they would throttle it to 1mb.

They keep those details well hidden though... a pain in the arse to find! If you are on 50MB plus though you have nothing to worry about :)

Thanks all for the reply's.

Yeah sorry didnt say where im located. Im in the UK, in a small town in the west midlands, next to worcester. So the best internet I can get it basic ADSL.

Ill check out plus.net, virgin and sky.
