We just built a new computer about 3 months ago and we have been trying to connect to the internet through a built in marvell gigabit ethernet card. Since it's only worked once and has yet to work again, we bought a regular belkin ethernet card and installed it. It is still NOT working. We disabled the onboard lan in bios and re-installed Windows more times than I can count. It found the new hardware and installed, we updated the drivers, and yet we still have the same message that says a cable is unplugged. Will someone please help, we've tried EVERYTHING. Thanks in advance!

if the card is installed correctly.. then it can only be a couple things... On the ethernet card do the light stay red/orange? There should be a blinking green.. Also what is your local ip? type ipconfig in dos prompt... in run type cmd to get the prompt..

bad ethernet cable, bad router, bad modem, bad wall jack.... multiple things

Nope it's a brand new cable and we have tried over 4 other cables. It's a brand new router, modem, and we have tried the old modem and old router. All other computer work fine so it's not a bad wall jack.

We are trying t connect through a router though, is there something different I should do?

Yes there is a green blinking light. I'm not sure about the local ip, but when I run ipconfig the prompt says that the media is disconnected.

Also when I try to run the internet connection wizard it says that there the card is disconnected, but under device manager it says the the device is working properly and reads it.

Should I manually type in the ip address?

How do you connect to the internet? Router right? You have the correct setting in the router to connect to the internet? Probably a PPpoe.. Have you confirmed this with another computer?

Yes the computer I'm connecting through right now is connected through the router and we have tried connecting directly to the cable modem and it still does not work. Thanks for the suggestions though, its actually helping us double check everything :)

And your sure your not using a cross over cable? .. Doesnt seem likely if your getting a green light on the network card. In the device manager is anything disabled? or have a yellow or red mark next to it?

Nope I'm sure it is not a cross over cable. In device manager there are no red or yellow marks in anything, however, in network connections, the "connection" says that there is a card but it is either disabled or not installed. Yet the card is being read and shows that it is working properly in device manager.

The error message we get is an icon in the task bar at the lower right hand corner has the 2 computers with a red x next to it and says that a network cable is unplugged.

Ok so let me get this straight either

#1 You DONT get internet, and it shows cable unplugged?

#2 You DO get internet, and it shows cable unplugged?

#1 I DO NOT get the internet and the it shows the cable is unplugged.

But the cable is clearly plugged in to the card and the router. We're starting to think it's a bad motherboard.

Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it. I'm about to throw this thing out of a window on an airplane.

start, run type "cmd" then type

ping localhost

This should show a listing of replies from the network card. If you receive an error or if the transmission failed, it is likely that either the network card is not physically installed into the computer correctly, or that the card is bad.

Then see if you can ping any other networked computers or the router...

Yep we just tried it that and it said that the local host was found and it pinged it, but we could not ping the router or the cable modem when we hooked it up directly to it.

Did you check in Device Manager and make sure the card is enabled?

Oh yea we've done that plenty of times. It says that it's enabled and is working properly yet it says that a cable is unplugged in the bottom right hand corner in the task bar.
