Raspberry-Pi

Dad has already said to me he's going to get me a Raspberry-Pi computer when it comes out. Basically it's a tiny little computer which runs a Linux-based OS and can be used for programming. They are looking to introduce these little computers into schools in Britain and hopefully then they can replace the current IT syllabus which let me tell you as a Year 9 student in Britain is boring as hell, it's just endless Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. I think really for £22, these computers should take off, and there's a £16 version available too if you can't afford £22 - £22 is just about $35 USD by the way, really cheap!

You can read about Raspberry-Pi here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17190918 and the BBC also have many more articles on it. What I'm interested though is who else is looking into purchasing one? I hope I do get one, I'm keen to see what they are like.

hmm i wonder if they will release it here too in holland. might get one, just because i want a linux system. and dont have the resources yet to build a desktop for linux. also would be badass to have it next to my rig lol

I'm really interested in this, but what all can I do with it?
Well it is running Debian and has an ethernet port so you should be use it for the internet, and I'd imagine you can install all your usual Linux programs -don't take me up on the program compatibility bit, but you should be able to use the £22 version online.

Hopefully it will be released worldwide, and if not you may be able to import one from over the North Sea. ;)

Well I think Raspberry-Pi would be good way to do it. I really hope it does get introduced into the IT syllabus in schools, it would really be a great chance for kids my age to start learning programming. Everybody is bored of the current Excel/Word/PowerPoint syllabus and I think Raspberry-Pi would give us a whole bunch of kids who could later go on into life as software developers, which would be good.

I pretty much mastered Microsoft Office by the time I finished 7th grade luckily my high school has C++ and AP Java :D

Well I can't wait for these to come out, I want to try one! If it takes off, then hopefully more people will start buying into Linux.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one of these as well. I'm especially excited by the 1080p video decoding demos I've seen. This little device will probably be the foundation of many future HTPC projects. Just assemble a NAS and put one of these behind the television and you've got a nice clean setup.

this looks like a good little computer. might make a good product, but is this a UK only thing, or will it be global?

i think its global. ive seen it advertised yesterday on a few dutch sites, but it could be imported from the uk not sure though

yea, stateside the only info I have seen on it has been on the forums here. It may be a european only release, or maybe I just have not been looking for it hard enough.

I hope Raspberry-Pi is released globally because then it really would take-off! I'm not sure if programming on the R-Pi is going to be introduced into the IT syllabus in countries globally but it definitely should be in the UK syllabus.

The Wikipedia article states that Premier Farnell, one of two licensed stores, will ship to customers outside of the UK.

One of those UK dealers ships to the US. There was also a US dealer selling them, but not many people ordered from them because they wanted a $30 handling fee. >.>

I was trying to get one, but the servers everywhere were overloaded when it came out (1am est). I gave up, went to bed, and when i woke up they were sold out. So, I'm just going to wait a while and I ordered a arduino to play with in the mean time.

yeh i was really wanting to get ma hands on one they look pretty cool, and could be useful for running a media server off, and trying to design a cool case for.

Dad has now registered with one of the official providers of Raspberry-Pi, think it's RS Components if I remember correctly? Anyway, once they come back in stock, I should be getting a Raspberry-Pi from these guys! :)

I am avidly waiting for one of those. According to one of their tweets, their website used up 1TB bandwidth in a week.

The demand for these things is just insane. I'm sure we'll get them pretty soon... just keep waiting...

I made up their slogan (Take a Byte) :D But yeah, I've been following this for almost a year and a half or two and was so exited on release date... mine will be coming in a couple weeks.
