My laptop died for the second time in it's three year life span today. It's basically dead, I need a bt.exe file that I guess isn't avalable for public download...which is dumb. I can't help to wonder that if I built my own system I would be able to bypass these issues? I mean, if I have a problem like I'm having now, all I would need to do is reinstall windows with my "actual" copy and things will go smoothly. I'm sure it's not that simple but I can always hope. It makes me mad that I am forced to send my laptop out to a service center to fix a problem that could very easily be fixed at my house.

I have one more avenue to persue but if that doesn't work...it's curtains for my laptop for a few days. I might just have the service people wipe my hard drive and reinstall windows...do my dirty work for me. IF my laptop is still under warranty that is.:mad::mad:

Warranties don't cover software programs, and if your problem is software related it is hardly the laptop's fault. It is most likely the OS or some software you put on there that caused it to crash.

Perhaps you are correct. I'm not sure what I did in order to cause this to happen. I ran a virus scan, and a hard drive defragment in safemode, I restarted and my Windows Installation was missing a file. I did remove 2 items in the scan, maybe that did it. Needless to say, the file I need is not available for public download which forces me to send it in for "repair"

Well after thinking it over some more, I have thought about just replacing the hard drive, and recovering Vista from there. I talked with a tech support guy and he said that was a very viable option due to my warranty being expired. He said I could also use my recovery DVD as well...so possibly I might have stumbled upon a cheap upgrade instead of sending it off to have my hard drive replaced for more money.

wait, you have a recovery DvD? why can't you use the current hdd? format it and reinstall the os using this dvd.:confused:

Well I talked to a tech guy a few hours ago and he said that it sounded like my hard drive was showing signs of failing. I can get a laptop hard drive for pretty cheap (around 70 dollars) and try that. It's a viable option, the tech has told me that there have been numerous questions regarding my issue and he has given the advice to replace the hard drive. I think that sounds easier than having to ship it out for a week or more.

If you booted into safe mode then it's most likely a driver problem. Don't replace a drive for a missing file!

Go get your hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic software and run a full/extended test. That's the only way to be sure you need a new drive.

Right, listen to the people above. When hard drives go out, they don't just lose one file at a time. When a hard drive starts to fail, it might start to work intermittently, but it will completely die pretty shortly after that. If it's just a problem with one file then your hard drive should be fine. The tech guy either didn't know what he was talking about, or he was trying to make a sale.

another thing why would you send it out for the hard drive to be replaced when that can easily be done by your self. im sure u can get a laptop drive for cheaper than 70 i replaced a hdd in a laptop a couple weeks ago with a 120 from newegg for 45

A HD failing is kind of obvious and that may be the case. If so exercise your warranty and get it replaced. Also, back up all your data you care about now if you can.

Well to have the customer repair service repair my laptop, after shipping and everything would be over the price of a replacement drive at 70 dollars, since my warranty is expired. I don't like the idea that this file I need isn't available for public download.

This may be my ignorance with hard drives here but do I need to be able to boot to windows if to run that hard drive diagnostic software? If that's the case, then that's not possible in my situation. Every time I boot off the hard drive I get a message "BOOTMGR is missing press CTRL + ALT + Delete to restart" and the process repeats itself. Like you said, replacing a hard drive is pretty cheap, around 50 bucks or so. I'm still thinking that would be a cheaper option.

Dont u think the logical idea would be to try and re-install the os first, ive had that problem numerous times, i just reinstalled and was fine

Haha maybe I wasn't clear on my initial problem. I can't reinstall the OS:) Thats my whole problem. When I try and set the OS install to a partition I get a HUGE error message. Upon further investigation it's the motherboard. I sent the laptop out for repair this morning. I didn't bother with a new hard drive, I just borrowed one from a buddy of mine and tested it, my hard drive was fine. The problem should be resolved here within a few days. Lets hope the repair service does a FULL repair, unlike the last "repair" where they replaced the motherboard but forgot to "stamp" it with a bt.exe file so I could use my recovery DVD

Wow, turns out to be neither a hardware or software problem. Who would have guessed it would be an issue with the firmware?

I'm not sure, I had a lengthy convorsation with another tech. representative and I got the "repair" with no charge. I should be a negotiator. So the issue should be resolved by Wednesday when I get my laptop back.

I asked why the bt.exe file isn't available for public download and with that file allows the recovery DVD to work with the motherboard. If that was available everyone would be able to use the recovery DVD with any computer...which would be awesome, but illegal. :(
