Random shutdown

Hey all

I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct section for this, so please say and ill move it.

But the problem is that my computer keeps powering off for no apparent reason, as if I pulled out the power cord.
It does seem to mainly happen when I'm playing a full screen game such as cs:s or COD.
However their are never any error messages, and when I start back up it doesn't display an error message like usual.

Any ideas where I can find a log of why this is happening or what's going on?

I'm using Windows Vista 32bit, an ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro graphics card, Intel Core 2 Duo CUP @ 3.00GHz

TLDR computer shut's down randomly..huh?

Thanks for any help

Go to c:\windows\minidump and see if there is any files in there at the times when your computer turns off. If there is without reading the dumps i can probably bet there is a problem with your video card causing windows to crash. I would start with drivers.

nope, no files in minidump

and looking though the admin tools -> event viewer, i couldn't see any errors or warnings concerning a shut down randomly

This is a powersupply issue. your PSU can't give enough power when you run games, so when it goes over the limit it switches off so it doesn't explode and fry your computer. What kind of powersupply do you have?

My PSU is a Bestec 250w i think, or at least thats what it seems to say on the side, it also says 150w max a bit down from 250w max though...

It's probably a driver that's causing it. When did it start happening?
I believe my drivers are up to date. And it started happening about a week or two ago, and has been progressively happening more often. I've been running it with the side of at the moment and that doesn't seemed to have really helped.

The fan on the CPU has been getting louder and louder recently as well, I've cleaned out all the dust but it hasn't made much of a change to the sound.

If it helps then I used CUPID to have a look at temperatures and what, but ive no idea what might be normal

Thanks

Well the odd thing is that it's been running fine for about 1-2 years. So I cant see why it would suddenly start dying now, no new devices have been added, only a mouse and keyboard attached though usb.

Thanks

It is the powersupply. a power supply will degrade over time. 1-2 years of use and it will start not being able to produce its rated power (for a cheap unit anyway.)
as said before it's time for a new one. get a 500w or so from a decent brand (corsair, ocz, thermaltake, coolermaster just to name a few)

You could get away with a 400w corsair.
