Random shut-down!?

Hi guys,

My unbranded desktop computer randomly did an emergency style shut down about 20 minutes ago.

One minute I was browsing MG-Rover.Org replying to a thread and the next it said "Shutting Down" and switched off!

I thought - Oh god! It has overheated!

But when it powered up again the temperature was at 44*C for the CPU and 33*C for the system as a whole, and the fan was spinning at a normal 4,400RPM speed.

Here is the details:

Windows 2000 Professional SP4
Asus motherboard
AMD DURON processor
19MB HDD - 15MB free space

The PC is used 12 hours (usually non-stop) per day, and is around 2 years old.

I would like to add I always service the computer regularly, and make sure it is in good shape, which it is!

It has only happened once, however I don't want it to happen again, and it is bugging me!

Before you get all bent about this you need to see if it happens again. A one time shutdown would not bother me. OK it would but I would realize I at that point have little ability to identify if it is a real issue or an anomaly.

Of course I have ideas as you did. I like you first thought heat? Well you kind of confirmed the obvious is not the issue.

Diagnostics take time. It must be done methodically to get good results. At this time I think there might not even be an issue.

Duplication is a fundamental to scientific discovery.

Well, we'll see if it happens again!

My business involves writing quite a lot of (long) emails and I just don't want to get almost finished with an email then have the computer shut down and delete it all!

I feel your concern. Is there a save button on your email text editor? I know not a long term solution but short term consider?

If you will going to over use the computer NON-STOP then there's a possibility that the circuit board got fried.

MoBo fried because of thermal stress? Yea except temps seemed in check. That is and was the obvious suspect. I do not think we are there at all. So where are we? I don't know any ideas guys? I do not see fried MoBo in any way.

I have ten other thoughts. But I wouldn't throw guesses out.;):)

Save as draft is really quite useful ;)
