RAM disk

I'm trying to make a RAM-disk to put my page files and internet cache since I don't want them to be constantly written on my SSD. What free programs are there to make the RAM-disks? I tried searching and it seems most are not free, or the free ones do not work on my system.

Are you worried about writing too much data to the SSD and wearing it out quicker or are you tring to get a performance boost? In either case I don't think the evidence supports either. Why it is true that all flash media is "damaged" by being written to the effective writes are an outragous number and the drives also have software that evens out the write acrossed the whole disc to prevent premature wear on any one spot.

It's not so much the limited write/erase of blocks that i'm worried about since these SSD's will be obsolete way before this limit is reached, but I'm doing this because no matter how great the SSD's are, they all still have weak points of very small random data being written to them. I'd like to eliminate that by making a RAM-disk to take care of some of the small random writes.

What are your systems specs. You may want to look at turning your swap file off in that case. If your running Windows XP and have 1 Gig of RAM or more it Windows isn't using your swap file anyway. It's still there of course but it not being utilized. If your running Vista it's likely going to be in use no matter how much RAM you have but you can try Ready Boost to help minimize the number of writes. As far as the internet cache goes it's hard to say how to move that.

It might be easier to just buy more RAM and disable the page file. If you have a hard disk drive for storage, you could move the page file to that drive. It might actually show an improvement in performance, as long as the page file isn't on the same drive as the OS.
