Rakmount 2U server as Desktop PC

Hello all, my question might sound weird or useless, but I wanted an answer to my question.

I recently bought a second hand IBM X3755 M3 Rackmount server to add to my collection, but none of my desktop computer have this kind of specs...

So, the exact specs of the server are:
32Gb Ram DDR2
3x AMD Opteron 6000 @ 2.8Ghz eatch core. (16.8Ghz)
4x SAS drives at 15k RMP
Open SLI slots for a future good GPU.

Now, with this said, would it be really bad to use it as a second PC (it would still be mounted in my server room with long cables for VGA and USB's)

Or would it severely decrease my performance in my desktop experience on a i7 3.2Ghz 8Gb ram laptop?

Yes it's weird, and I don't really care about the money I spend on it, it's just a question :)

EDIT: I would run Windows 7 x64 and Debian on it. (Not all applications i use work on unix systems. it would run on the virtualization)

Thank you!
PVTD

W7 can only run with a maximum of 2 CPU's.
What processors are in it?
That is a G34 system and the smallest is an 8 core per CPU.
If I had that I'd be a folding fool... :D
You can use it as a PC but you will won't be using all the cores 99.9% of the time.
There aren't many apps that will use 24 cores basing that on a 3x 8 core cpu.

I'd love a G34 4P server but they are out of my price range unless I was to sell all 3 of my servers for a decent price.

Well, it will be a 2 OS system, so part of the CPU would go for Debian, probably net.

It should be the AMD Opteron 2218 Dual-Core 2.6GHz 2M.

I was just curious on what it would effect my daily use on programming servers.

Your answer was 70% of my question and it helped me a lot already :D
thx

You have the model wrong if it is running those CPU's.
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/x/hardware/rack/x3755m3/specs.html

Edit: It can't be the 2xxx series if you are running 3 of them, the 2xxx series is limited to 2 CPU's, unless you have a 2 node motherboard.
If you do have the 2xxx CPU's someone has swapped out the motherboard for that server case.

The 2xxx and 8xxx series are socket F (1207) just like 2 of my servers are.

Grrrrr, this makes it kinda complicated as I already payed for it.

The CPU is AMD Opteron Dual-Core 2.6GHz, I figured the closest match I had was that exact model...

I might be wrong, the company I buy it from as second hand has a Windows Certificate Distribution, so I can return it with the papers.

It should arrive end this upcoming week, the price wasn't to high neither (400 Euro, sending costs inc.)

So, I will see the exact info about it soon. The seller also let me know it had a covered 4th socket space for an extra CPU, I don't see the need for it now, except if things go well on the projects I plan to run on it :)

thx

I have no idea, I already asked them to cancel the order and they stopped it in time.
I found another machine who's cheaper in price comming from the UK.
After some research I also found out I can only support PCIe 1 GPU or PCI x8.
So Ill need to buy a PCI x8 to x16 hub to actually get "some" performance :P

Anyhow, ill let you guy know when it gets here, and if it doesn't fit my needs it will land on ebay.
