Rack server

Just a brief query for anyone with experience or knowledge in Rack type servers.

Does anyone here have a rough guide price to how much a rack server would be for general home usage.
What i mean by home usage as in a small server whihc can be as a internet filter and data backup and possible just for large files to be stored instead of on a desktop.

Reason i am talking with reference to a rack server is because of the size.

Any prices etc and with specs for a basic to mid range one please.

If possible prices in UK Pound please.

Cheers

Tom

The HP ProLiant rack mounts have never served me wrong. They are affordable and perform extremely well for the cost. Here is a list of some that I'd think you should take a look at if you're interested in rack mounts. No operating system is installed with these and if you need more space, you can always add on hard drives later down the road. I'll list them from high price to low and of course you would have to tack on shipping if you were to buy one of them.

ProLiant DL145 G2 AMD 2.6GHz Opteron processor

$2,119 ~ £1139

ProLiant DL320 G4 Intel 3GHz Pentium D processor

$1,729 ~ £930

ProLiant DL145 AMD 2.2GHz Opteron processor

$1,609 ~ £865

ProLiant DL320 G4 Intel 2.8GHz Pentium D processor

$1,539 ~ £827

ProLiant DL320 Intel 2.8GHz Pentium D processor

$1,529 ~ £822

Sorry if my conversions are a little off but you get the idea :D.

Thanks, that was very useful. So as i live in UK, for a top end one of the basic range it would be about 800pound. So what sort of things are these servers ideal for, i mean they would likely to be running windows server 2003 and then how knay ports and what ports are on them. Got any close up photos if you own any your self?...

Thanks.

Yes, some of my ProLiant servers at work are running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and some are running Gentoo and or FreeBSD. I'll have to show you some pictures once I get the time :(. Unfortunately I don't have any at home, but not for long :D. I’m hoping this summer to redesign my network and do some upgrades and that looks like a good upgrade.

Here are some of the I/O ports that come with most of them:

(2) RJ-45 (1-Dedicated for HP ProLiant Lights Out 100i Remote Management )
(1) PS/2 mouse
(1) Graphics/keyboard
(1) Serial
(4) USB (2 front)
