im making a short movie by combining game footage and doing a voice over for my project. would like to make sure that im not violating any copyright law. i wouldnt get in trouble for posting video on youtube and stuff right?

Well it should be covered under fair use. But as we all know if the copyright holder complains about you using it youtube etc will take it done in a heart beat. And the DMCA of 2000 pretty much got ride of fair for everyone other then educators employeed by school.

As far as I remember from school: you are allowed to use copyrighted video/audio as long as the audio is under 30 seconds total for the entire piece. That means you can use as many segments of the audio piece you want, just as long as it's only 30 seconds long. I think copyrighted video is a total of one minute. Same thing as audio.

well, im actually capturing my gameplay (sims 2, gta, crysis...etc) then edit them into a movie. once done, i do a voice over. i was thinking the copyrighted material we're talking about is the game themselves, not the screenshot or gameplay.

No...You won't get in any trouble, you'll find videos of gameplay all over YouTube. Don't even give it a second thought to worry about it.
