For those of you who go to college and use your laptop, how many of you take it to school and is there a area to plug it in or do you guys rely on the battery? Thank for any input.

Well good to know, I am currently trying to decide on which laptop to get. This really helps out a lot. Thanks.

Get something with a good 9 or 12 cell battery. If your sitting in a 2 hour class, there usually isn't anywhere to plug in (in my case anyway there isn't).

I'm expecting to see my battery kick the bucket within the next 2 years.

I am looking at getting a HP with a 12 cell, but since it has the new i3 cpu no one (not even the munfacture) knows what the battery life will be like. Just dont want to be in class worrying about my battery dying.

I'm using a desktop / netbook configuration, it's quite nice. I run all my engineering programs and games on my desktop and I bring my netbook to class for taking notes (or surfing the web).

the college i went to didnt mind. none of my professors saw it an issue at all, id just sit at a desk near a wall outlet and plug it in if my battery was going low. also, the college was nice enough to have a wifi network surrounding the entire campus, unrestricted internet access, no password, and 30 megs down/16 up :)

i've started using a laptop in the last two semesters and i wonder how i ever managed without it :D

i use mine before class as most professors frown upon students going on facebook and such while in class, ymmv.
any decent school should have plugs available for your laptop, so that shouldn't be a problem.

if i could do it over, however, i would buy one with a smaller screen. the 15.6in is nice, but a pita to maneuver with. but not as small as a netbook, those suck, you can't see shit.

I used a laptop (hp pavilion dv6000) for a while but I found that my battery is more than dead after 3 years. It lasts about 15-30sec now so it is just an underpowered desktop:(. If you feel like you can not live without a computer in class, I would recommend that you get a netbook that has a light operating system and great battery life and link it securely through remote desktop (or any other software that does the same thing). just like diduknowthat had said. Although if your laptop is going to be the only computer up there, this obviously will not work.

As for plug ins for your laptop... there are a few in the big lecture halls, but you have to get there early to get that spot and it is usually off to the side where you can not see the notes very well.

good luck with your decision!

Got lucky with mine, though it was expensive for what it is. I've got a 2GHz Core 2 Duo system stuffed into a fairly lightweight 12" case, with 4+ hours of battery life. Useful. However, netboks have much better battery life, and when you take into account that I was running on low power all the time to conserve the battery, they're also more powerful in a way.

However, when you look at the price of laptops and what you're wanting it for, it might be better for you to get a desktop and netbook. Newer netbooks can top 14 hours of battery life, while still saving you enough money to buy or build a decent desktop to do the fun stuff on.
