question for network experts

can you keep adding switches /hubs to keep adding computers(up to 253) or is it better to have one 24 port switch for example, and run cables directly from it to all the computers? this is a home network and my speedstream router has 4 ports, and i have an 8 port netgear switch in the next room, it also feeds another room where i have a 5 port netgear which feeds that room and my shop, and thinking on getting another 5 port to run a couple of security cameras (at my shop which is the end of all this). so far i haven't had any real problems except having to reset the switches sometimes.(unplug them for a few minutes) Does this cause any issues with the auto assigning of ip adresses at ea one? If i get the cameras, i want clean pitures, at the end of prob. 150 ft total of cat 5E and will be thru 3 switches, a router and dsl modem. I would have no more than 6 computers on at the same time., not incl. the cameras of which i have yet to buy. comments????????thanks...

Hmm I think I understand what you're saying, I would say it wouldn't cause much problem, but I think small routers [say 4 port routers] weren't made to have too many computers connected to them. So maybe buying bigger routers would be good, and also, maybe connecting the small routers to the big routers would work better so all the weight is not put into the small ones. Not sure if that makes much sense hehe

thanks for reply...i would certainly agree. but very seldom i have all them on at the same time so its prob. not a big concern, but i would be curious on how many 4-5 port hubs one could keep "adding". i've never seen a recommended method by which , if a person wanted to instal 253 computers, not all at the same time, you would run out of ports, but then as you mentioned, you should have those 16, 24 or higher port jobs. i might ask our network person about this, just for the fun of it. but i think i do need a 8 port router instead of this 4 port, but i'm not wanting to re-do the cat 5 cabling now. you'd think the manuals for these 4-5 port hubs would tell you the max ea. one could support. (sort of like daisy chain scuzzy system). thanks..paul (i'm also a scuzzy kind of guy...folks don't know what the heck your talking about!)
